Hi Tymek! I am really sorry, but I cannot go to the cinema with you on Saturday after all. My cousin from Gdańsk is coming for the weekend and my parents want me to show her the town. Let me know tonight, because I have to book new seats. Lena

Friday, 6th March

Three months ago Dad brought home a jigsaw puzzle with a thousand pieces. We put it on the small table in the living room and promised each other that we would finish it before spring. Some evenings we put in five pieces, some evenings none at all. Mum kept saying we should throw it away, because nobody could use the table. Tonight at nine o'clock we put in the last piece, the sky in the top corner. Tomorrow we are starting a new one.

  • undefined. This note is about A. a present the writer got for a birthday. B. a long project the writer did at home. C. a competition at the writer's school.

WHY OLD BOOKS SMELL SO GOOD

Walk into a second-hand bookshop and you will notice it at once: that warm, sweet smell of old paper. Many people love it, and today scientists know exactly where it comes from. Paper is made of wood, and wood contains hundreds of natural substances. 8.1. _____ Some of them smell of vanilla, some of almonds and some of cut grass. Together they make the smell that we simply call old book. Every book smells a little different. 8.2. _____ That is why a book printed in 1950 does not smell like a book printed last year. Museums have started to use this. In the Netherlands a team of scientists collected the smell of an old library and closed it in a bottle. 8.3. _____ Visitors close their eyes, smell it, and suddenly they are standing between the shelves of a library that no longer exists.

Zdania do wyboru

  • A. The kind of paper, the ink and even the room where the book was kept all change it.
  • B. Most of these substances disappear while the paper is still new.
  • C. As the paper slowly breaks down, these substances escape into the air.
  • D. Now people can smell it in an exhibition, hundreds of kilometres away.

Afterwards we come back to the library for hot chocolate and we look at your photos together.

Tekst 2

MIA'S BLOG, 3rd September. Everybody asks me what I brought back from Scotland, and my answer always surprises people. I took more than four hundred photos, but I have not looked at them once since I came home. The thing I really keep is a drawing of the harbour at Oban, which I made myself one rainy afternoon. It is not very good, but when I look at it I can remember the rain, the boats and the cold wind.
